Fernwood Craftsman is the most original house in Aspect’s Old Mill Historic District inventory — largely unrestored since 1908, with a river-rock chimney anchoring the street facade and boxed eaves showing exposed rafter tails exactly as the style calls for. Built-in cabinetry in the dining room and an unrestored original kitchen remain untouched, which reads to some buyers as deferred maintenance and to others, correctly, as an unusually intact time capsule.
A later rear addition — added sometime in the 1970s but sympathetically detailed to the original house — houses a small studio oriented for north light, its single large window facing due north to give a working artist even, shadow-free illumination through the day. The addition’s roofline steps down from the main house, keeping the original 1908 massing legible from the street. The historic district’s design-review overlay applies to any exterior work here, which buyers should factor into renovation planning.
