Meadowbrook Passive Solar was designed and built in 2015 as a genuine passive-solar house, not a marketing label applied after the fact. The south-facing glazing ratio, the overhang depth above it, and the thermal mass of the polished concrete floor were all calculated together at the design stage so that the roof overhang blocks high summer sun while letting low winter sun reach deep into the plan and charge the floor slab with heat that radiates back out overnight.
A clerestory band above the main glazing adds daylight to the rear of the open plan without adding proportional heat gain, since its smaller area and steeper sun angle limit direct-gain hours to the shoulder seasons. The building envelope is superinsulated well beyond code minimum, with windows detailed to eliminate thermal bridging at the frames — a detail visible up close where the window returns are noticeably deeper than a standard build. Utility bills, per the current owners’ two years of statements available on request, run roughly 40% below comparable-sized homes in the area.
